HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 cc572-3W
Mr. Iain Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many drivers have been killed in heavy goods vehicles during carriage by road in 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Mrs. Chalker

The numbers of drivers of HGVs killed in 1980, 1981 and 1982, the latest three years for which compete data are available, were 57, 50 and 58 respectively, and 29 in the first three quarters of 1983.

These figures include drivers killed whilst the vehicle was stationary, but omit drivers killed while outside the vehicle—they are reported as pedestrians. A distinction between laden and unladen vehicles is not possible.
