Mr. David Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of motorway in England were completed in 1983; how many miles are under construction; and how many miles are planned.

47 miles of trunk road motorway were completed in 1983, excluding the four-mile stretch of M25 between the A10 and M11 opened at the end of last month. At 1 February 1984,70 miles of trunk road motorway were under construction. A further 131 miles are planned.

Dr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how many miles of motorway are currently under construction in each of the regional areas;

(2) how many miles of motorway are currently being planned in each of the regional areas;

(3) how many miles of motorway have been opened in the last five years in each of the regional areas;

(4) how many staff are engaged in motorway schemes in each of the regional offices;

(5) how many staff are engaged in trunk road schemes in each of the regional offices.
