HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 c548W
21. Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is satisfied that the educational courses available in colleges for persons wishing to be trained to work with mentally handicapped persons in special schools and at adult training centres are adequate to meet demand and have sufficient resources for this purpose.

Sir Keith Joseph

I have asked the advisory committee on the supply and education of teachers to undertake a broad-based review of the training requirements of teachers in special education, and I hope to receive its advice with recommendations by Easter. Adult training centres are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services. However, I understand that the most appropriate current qualification for the staff of adult training centres is the certificate of social service. I have no evidence to suggest that further education institutions are unable to meet the demand for courses leading to this qualification.
