HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 c540W
Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the total increase in the number of unemployed people in Scotland since May 1979.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The number of unemployed claimants in Scotland on 12 January 1984 showed an increase of 199,025 on the estimated corresponding figure for May 1979. (Direct comparisons are not possible because of the change in October 1982 from a registrants-based to a claimants-based count.)
