Mr. Moore

Estimates of the yields accruing in each year from taxing the benefit of company cars available for private use are as follows:

£ million
1979–80 70
1980–81 85
1981–82 115
1982–83 145
1983–84 *280
* Includes the yield from taxation of car fuel benefit.

Mr. Iain Mills

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the change in annual revenue received that would result from the taxation of company cars if this threshold was raised from £8,500 to £10,000, £12,000 and £15,000 per annum, respectively.

Mr. Moore

The revenue costs of raising the £8,500 limit to the levels suggested would, in relation only to the taxation of car benefits—including the provision of car fuel for private motoring—be £20 million, £45 million and £65 million, respectively, in a full year at 1983–84 levels of income and tax rates.
