HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 c549W
23. Mr. Ioan Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the effect of the Government attempt to control the level of local authority current expenditure in England on future educational standards.

40. Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what assessment he has made of the effect the Government's proposals to curtail the expenditure of local authorities is likely to have on educational standards and facilities.

Sir Keith Joseph

Authorities selected for rate limitation in 1985–86 will be those spending significantly above their GRE assessment. They will need to secure better value for money in areas where they are at present high spenders. but there is no reason why this should lead to a reduction in educational standards.
