Mr. John David Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) if he will resist representations from the Government of Cyprus to discriminate against exports by Turkish Cypriots living in northern Cyprus;
(2) if he will seek to ensure that the Commission of the European Communities continues to apply the terms of the Cyprus/EEC association agreement fairly and equitably to both Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
§ Mr. WhitneyTrade between Cyprus and the member states of the Community is governed by the terms of the EC/Cyprus association agreement. The implementation of the agreement in the light of the purported unilateral declaration of independence by the Turkish Cypriot community is a matter for decision by the Community as a whole, and is currently under discussion in Brussels.
Mr. John David Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the up-to-date response by both Greece and Turkey being guarantor powers, to his proposal that they should meet him to discuss the situation in the island of Cyprus.
§ Mr. WhitneyThe Turkish Government have agreed to take part in tripartite consultations about Cyprus under the 1960 treaty of guarantee. The Greek Government have said that they are not prepared to be a party to tripartite consultations under present circumstances. We remain ready to participate in consultations together under the treaty whenever the other two Governments are also willing to take part.
