§ 38. Mr. Fisherasked the Secretary of State for Transport how many road accidents, in the last 12 months for which statistics are available, were the result of tyre failure.
§ Mrs. ChalkerNational road accident statistics do not identify vehicle factors contributing to accidents.
A TRRL survey in one locality carried out between 1970 and 1974 indicated that tyre deflation before impact —including punctures—was a major contributory factor in 1.2 per cent. of accidents, but there have been considerable improvements in tyre construction over the last 10 years.
