HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 c447W
38. Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many road accidents, in the last 12 months for which statistics are available, were the result of tyre failure.

Mrs. Chalker

National road accident statistics do not identify vehicle factors contributing to accidents.

A TRRL survey in one locality carried out between 1970 and 1974 indicated that tyre deflation before impact —including punctures—was a major contributory factor in 1.2 per cent. of accidents, but there have been considerable improvements in tyre construction over the last 10 years.
