asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the average level of fare rises on British Rail passenger services in the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. David Mitchell

British Rail increased most passenger fares by an average of around 6 per cent. on 8 January. This was 12 months after the previous fare rise in January 1983 which averaged about 7 per cent. The increase on 8 January 1984 was the lowest for 11 years.
