§ Mr. Lathamasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has received reports from Her Majesty's ambassador in South Africa or from sporting sources in that country of the nature and conduct of the current cricket tour in that country of a team of West Indian cricketers; and whether he intends to review any implications for continued United Kingdom participation in the Gleneagles agreement in the light of it.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneI have received reports from our embassy of the unofficial tour of South Africa by cricketers from the West Indies. These contain nothing to suggest that the Government's commitment to the Commonwealth Statement on Apartheid in Sport should be reviewed. (This was reaffirmed last November by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister and other Commonwealth leaders meeting in New Delhi).
§ Mr. Canavanasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will arrange a meeting with sports authorities to discuss reinforcement of the application of the Gleneagles agreement.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneI have no plans to do so. The sporting authorities are well aware of the Government's support for the 1977 Commonwealth Statement on Apartheid in Sport. I am however always available to advise sports bodies on specific instances as they arise.
