Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many claimants have been subject to voluntary unemployment deductions and at what rate in the year to July 1983 and subsequently to date; and what has been the total amount of money deducted in both years.

Information is not available in the form requested. The latest available information relates to December 1982 when it was estimated that 188,000 claimants would be subject to voluntary unemployment deductions in the year up to July 1983; 112,000 at the higher 40 per cent. rate and 76,000 at the lower 20 per cent. rate. The total amount of benefit deducted for this period is estimated at £4.9 million.

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many claimants who are school leavers have been subject to voluntary unemployment deductions since July 1983 (a) for leaving youth training scheme places and (b) for refusing to take up a youth training scheme place.
