HC Deb 02 February 1984 vol 53 c283W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many have applied for higher school bursaries in Wales in the current school session.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

Higher school bursaries are not available in Wales. Local education authorities in Wales are empowered to make discretionary awards known as educational maintenance awards—EMAs—to pupils who stay on in school beyond compulsory school age. Information on the number who have applied for EMAs is not kept by the Welsh Office.
