Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what proportion of sulphur dioxide emitted in the United Kingdom is due to coal-fired and to oil-fired power stations, respectively.

Mr. Waldegrave

The figures requested are, for 1982: coal-fired power stations 56.5 per cent; oil-fired stations 9.1 per cent.

Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will ask the Royal Commission on environmental pollution to examine the issue of acid rain and to issue an early report.

Mr. Waldegrave

I understand that the Royal Commission intends to comment on acid deposition in its 10th report, which is to be published later this month.
