HC Deb 01 February 1984 vol 53 c241W
Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many (a) males and (b) females in the Burnley travel-to-work area have been unemployed for (i) up to six months, (ii) six to 12 months, (iii) 12 to 18 months and (iv) over two years in the last month for which figures are available.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the figures for unemployed claimants in the Burnley travel-to-work area who, on 13 October 1983, the latest date for which the statistics are available, had been unemployed for the lengths of time specified. It also gives the figures for those who had been unemployed for over 18 months to two years. The male figures are affected by the provisions announced in the 1983 Budget, which meant that some men aged 60 and over no longer had to sign on.
