asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of secondary school sixth formers who applied for an arts degree university course for the academic year 1984–85 received notifications of rejection.

Information on university applicants from school sixth forms is not readily available. In 1983, the latest year for which information is available, 47 per cent. of all home candidates who applied for a university arts degree through the UCCA were not accepted for any degree course.
