asked the Secretary of State for Transport what has been the total mileage of electrified railway line on inter-city routes in each of the years since 1954.

In 1979 British Rail had 2310 route miles (6107 track miles) of electrified railway. Electric services from London to Bedford began in 1983, adding 54 route miles and 225 track miles.

Electrification of a further 617 route miles (1533 track miles) has been approved since 1981. Work will be completed between 1985 and 1991.

Separate figures are not readily available for Inter-City routes or for earlier years.
