HC Deb 19 December 1984 vol 70 cc179-80W
Mr. Caborn

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the total amount paid to metropolitan county councils and the Greater London council in transport supplementary grant in the current financial year for services and capital expenditure in categories which will not qualify for transport supplementary grant under the regulations which will apply in 1985–86 and subsequent years.

Mrs. Chalker

It is not possible to relate a particular amount of transport supplementary grant to particular categories of expenditure. This is because transport supplementary grant is a block grant and was paid in 1984–85 on the amount of accepted expenditure for each council which exceeded a threshold of £25.03 per head. The total amount of grant paid to the metropolitan county councils and the Greater London council in 1984–85 was £247.72 million. The total of accepted expenditure was £902.8 million of which about £233 million relates to public transport in London, which is no longer the responsibility of the Greater London council, and £522 million relates to expenditure which would no longer be eligible for transport supplementary grant.
