HC Deb 19 December 1984 vol 70 c180W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has made for improving road communications between Birmingham and the east coast ports.

Mrs. Chalker

The Government's trunk road programme contains a number of schemes for improving routes between Birmingham and the East Anglian ports. The most important is the proposed M1–Al link road, into which a public inquiry is in progress, and which would complete a high-standard dual carriageway route from the M1–M6 junction to Ipswich. In addition, the western section of the Ipswich bypass is expected to open late in 1985; and a number of planned improvements to the A47 east of Leicester and the A11 north of Newmarket would cater for traffic to Great Yarmouth.
