HC Deb 19 December 1984 vol 70 c236W
11. Mr. Bruce

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what studies his Department carried out prior to the flotation of British Telecom as to the likely nature and level of demand for shares; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Channon

A programme of market research was undertaken in the months before the flotation to help assess the likely public demand for shares; and discussions were held by the Department's advisers with financial institutions in order to assess the institutional demand.

Mr. Geoffrey Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will list the criteria and circumstances under which the Government will use their shareholding to influence decisions take by British Telecom.

Mr. Butcher

I have nothing to add to the statement in the prospectusHer Majesty's Government does not intend to use its rights as an ordinary shareholder to intervene in the commercial decisions of British Telecom".
