HC Deb 19 December 1984 vol 70 c213W
Mr. Hume

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement outlining the policy regarding the use of Irish names by parents registering the birth of children in the Registrar General's offices in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Chris Patten

There is no separate policy on the use of Irish names. In all cases the final decision about the names and spelling of names must be made by the informant and that spelling must be inserted on the registration form.
