HC Deb 18 December 1984 vol 70 c77W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what are the latest estimates of his Department of the numbers and percentages of children of school age attending Welsh medium schools or Welsh units.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

In 1983–84, the latest year for which information is available, the number of full-time pupils attending designated bilingual primary and secondary schools was 20,450, 4.3 per cent. of all full-time primary and secondary pupils. These figures do not include pupils attending schools in mainly Welsh speaking areas where although the main medium of instruction is Welsh, the schools have not been formerly designated.
