§ 31. Mr. Thurnhamasked the Secretary of State for Employment what further action he is taking to control the total running costs of his Department.
§ Mr. Tom KingThe plans to improve control of the Department's running costs were set out in the White Paper on financial management in Government Departments, which was published in July 1984 (Cmnd. 9297). Substantial progress has been made in implementing the Department's programme, including new arrangements for the involvement of myself and the other Ministers in the final stages of the review. I also receive periodic reports from the Manpower Services Commission and Health and Safety Commission on progress in implementing the financial management initiative and have discussed this with their chairmen.
