HC Deb 17 December 1984 vol 70 c52W
Mr. Sayeed

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of retirement pensioners; and what is the total number of pensioner family units.

Mr. Whitney

At September 1983, the latest date for which information is available, there were 9,192,000 people receiving a retirement pension in Great Britain, including people who receive only small amounts of pension by way of graduated retirement benefit. Estimates derived from family expenditure survey data indicate that in 1982 there were some 6,290,000 family units in Great Britain headed by a retirement pensioner.
