HC Deb 17 December 1984 vol 70 c38W
Mr. Forman

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many of the long-term unemployed, that is those out of work for one year or longer, have no formal qualifications; and what were the comparable figures for 1974 and 1979.

Mr. Alan Clark

Results from the 1983 labour force survey indicate that in the second quarter of 1983 there were 1,213,000 persons in Great Britain aged 16 to 59 without a job who were looking for work in the week before the survey and had been seeking for more than a year. Of these, 726,000 had no educational or vocational qualifications. The corresponding figures from the 1979 survey were 288,000 and 207,000, respectively. There was no labour force survey in 1974.
