HC Deb 14 December 1984 vol 69 c615W
Mr. Sayeed

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of the total space available in each type and class of Her Majesty's warships has been taken by accommodation and recreational space over the past 30 years; and how current Royal Navy warships compare in this way with those of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Mr. Lee

The figures requested are not readily available for all classes. However, data for major classes of surface warships currently in service, together with the NATO average and Soviet Krivak class for comparison purposes are as follows:

Class Percentage of ship by volume for recreation and accommodation Allocation of space per man (Sq. M)
Sheffield Class 26.7 3.43
Broadsword Class 23.8 4.25
Leander* 32.0 3.59
NATO Average 25.0 4.32
Krivak 27.0 4.26
Notes:
* The Leander, being a steam ship, carries a larger crew for her size than other classes. Hence the higher proportion of the ship dedicated to accommodation, but lower allocation per man.
What we know of other modem Soviet warship classes confirms these figures.
