Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will give details of the number of private firearms certificates currently issued in Northern Ireland, together with details of the division of such certificates between the Protestant and Catholic communities; and how many certificates are held by members of the Ulster Defence Regiment and its Reserve and the Royal Ulster Constabulary and its Reserve.

At 30 November 1984, 85,880 firearms certificates were on issue to persons in Northern Ireland. Of these, 866 were held by members of the Ulster Defence Regiment and 212 by members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary and its Reserve. Information is not kept on the religious denomination of firearm certificate holders.
