HC Deb 14 December 1984 vol 69 c659W
Mr. John Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if his Department will continue the funding in 1985–86 of City Roads detoxification unit for young drug addicts.

Mr. John Patten

The general scheme for grants to voluntary organisations under section 64 of the Health Services and Public Health Act 1968 is used for two main purposes: one is to help with national organisations' general costs; the other is to support specific projects for a specific period, usually limited to three years—this includes experimental or innovative local schemes of wider significance. The Department's grant to City Roads, which falls into the latter category, has already been extended exceptionally to six years, of which 1984–85 is the last. We are, however, considering an application from City Roads for a substantial capital grant towards the purchase and renovation of the building next to its existing premises. We await the views of the local statutory authorities on this application.
