HC Deb 13 December 1984 vol 69 cc585-6W
Mr. Sackville

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of the recently announced additional £5 million funding in connection with drug abuse is to be used for treatment facilities.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

£3 million has been allocated to our drugs initiative for projects to provide treatment and rehabilitation, which was previously over-subscribed. Much of this will be taken up by applications already received but a circular will be issued to health and local authorities and to the voluntary sector, advising that money will be available for especially innovative and interesting new projects.

In addition, the interdepartmental ministerial group on the misuse of drugs, which meets regularly under the chairmanship of my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Home Affairs is giving the highest priority to reviewing prevention and enforcement policies. I have therefore decided that £2 million is to be earmarked for a prevention campaign.
