Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many households are in receipt of supplementary benefit housing addition payments for mortgage interest in (a) London and (b) Great Britain.

Mr. Whitney

Provisional estimates for December 1983* indicate that in some 250,000 cases in Great Britain an amount for mortgage interest was included in the supplementary benefit assessment.

Separate estimates for London are not available.
