HC Deb 12 December 1984 vol 69 c520W
34. Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations he has made to Governments of middle eastern Islamic states, such as Saudi Arabia, regarding the right of Christians living or working in those countries to celebrate religious services, especially at Christmas time; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Luce

None. The difficulty is not a widespread one, but we are, of course, concerned that British subjects in all countries should be able to worship in private groups in accordance with their conscience at Christmas as at other times. In places where problems may occur, the embassy monitors the situation closely in consultation with concerned members of the British community, and endeavours to ensure that suitable arrangements for worship are made.
