15. Mr. Norman Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will now call upon the United States Government to join Britain in new initiatives with Ankara, following the breakdown of the proximity talks in regard to Cyprus.

Mr. Renton

The proximity talks organised by the United Nations Secretary General have not broken down. We, the United States Government and our allies have given every support to the Secretary General's initiative. We are in constant touch with all the parties to the dispute to that end.

36. Mr. Hickmet

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the current negotiations in New York on the future of Cyprus.

Mr. Renton

The third round of proximity talks held under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary General, started on 26 November. We have given every support to the Secretary General in his search for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.
