HC Deb 11 December 1984 vol 69 cc451-2W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the current average levels of pay of secondary school headmasters, deputy headmasters and teaching staff; and how they compare with those of 1979 and with those of each year since 1979.

Mr. Dunn

Information by the grades requested is not readily available. I shall write to the hon. Member about this as soon as possible. The average salaries of all full-time teachers in maintained secondary schools in England and Wales were as follows:

31 March £
1979 5,181
1980 6,217
1981 7,783
1982 8,454
*1983 9,048
* Provisional.

Since 31 March 1983, the latest date for which complete figures are available, salary rates have been increased by 4.98 per cent. (from 1 April 1983) and 5.1 per cent. (from 1 April 1984) and the application of those increases to the 1983 provisional figure above produces a current estimated average salary for full-time secondary school teachers of £9,983.
