HC Deb 11 December 1984 vol 69 c432W
Mr. Hickmet

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement upon the effect which the militarisation of Lemnos by Greece has had upon the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance and Britain's defence relations with Greece and Turkey.

Mr. Stanley

The military status of Lemnos is a matter of dispute between Greece and Turkey. Both NATO and the United Kingdom have taken an even-handed approach and have urged the two countries to resolve their differences bilaterally. But their disagreements have, nevertheless, affected NATO's ability to conduct exercises in the Aegean. Our defence relations with Greece and Turkey remain unaffected.
