HC Deb 10 December 1984 vol 69 c335W
Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the number of fatal and non-fatal accidents investigated by the marine inspectors in each of the years since 1978.

Mr. David Mitchell

Information on investigations conducted by marine surveyors is not set out to provide this answer readily. The cause of death in all fatal accidents on merchant ships is inquired into by either a proper officer or a United Kingdom coroner or procurator fiscal. At the present time their reports are examined within marine directorate and, whenever the circumstances warrant it, a further investigation by marine surveyors is made and appropriate action is taken. Reports of all serious non-fatal accidents are made direct to Marine directorate where they are considered in the same way.
