Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) how many new jobs he estimates were created in the Ilfracombe development area during the last five years for which figures are available;

(2) how many new jobs he estimates have been created in the Barnstable and South Molton assisted area during the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Alan Clark

I have been asked to reply.

My Department has no information about the numbers of new jobs created. Details of net changes in employment are available but, for areas smaller than regions, only for those years when censuses of employment are conducted. Between the June 1978 census of employment and the next one in September 1981, there was a net change of minus 100 employees in the Ilfracombe travel-to-work area and a net change of plus 1,600 employees in the Barnstable travel-to-work area, which at that time included South Mouton.
