HC Deb 07 December 1984 vol 69 cc311-2W
Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what evidence he has available as to the size of firms which are providing jobs under the young workers scheme.

Mr. Alan Clark

Information from a sample survey carried out in early 1983 suggests the distribution of approved applications under the young workers scheme, but by size of establishment and not by size of firm. The information is as follows:

Size of establishment (employees) Percentage
1 to 10 57
11 to 24 23
25 to 49 9
50 to 99 4
100 to 199 4
200 to 499 2
500 plus 1

Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what evidence he has on the breakdown of jobs provided under the young workers scheme by standard industrial classification.

Mr. Alan Clark

Since the young workers scheme started in January 1982, approved applications have been categorised by standard industrial classification divisions. The breakdown for October, the latest date for which information is available, is:

Young workers scheme approved applications—monthly breakdown by standard industrial classification
SIC division number and division October per cent.
0 Agriculture, forestry and fishing 3
1 Energy and water supply industries 1
2 Extraction of minerals and ores other than fuels; manufacture of metals, mineral products and chemicals 2
3 Metal goods, engineering and vehicles industries 9
4 Other manufacturing industries 14
5 Construction 15
6 Distribution, hotels and catering; repairs 29
7 Transport and communication 3
8 Banking, finance, insurance, business services and leasing 8
9 Other services 16

Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people have been taken on to the young workers scheme after they have been on either (a) the youth opportunities programme or (b) the youth training scheme with the same employer.

Mr. Alan Clark

The only information currently available is a sample survey conducted between Febntary and April 1983 which suggested that 32 per cent. of young workers had been on a youth opportunities programme, 26 per cent. with the same employer.
