HC Deb 06 December 1984 vol 69 c266W
Mr. Greenway

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people are employed in the pharmaceutical industry; what is the current value of pharmaceutical exports; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The estimated number of people employed in the United Kingdom pharmaceutical products industry (standard industrial classification 2570) at September 1984 was 82,300. Earlier published figures related to a different classification and are not, therefore, comparable.

In 1983 the value of export trade in medicinal and pharmaceutical products as defined in United Nations standard international trade classification 54 was £1,073 million. In the first nine months of 1984 export sales totalled £876 million.
