asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what response he has had to his recent circular on National Health Service privatisation.

Mr. John MacKay

The majority of health boards are complying directly with the request to test the cost-effectiveness of their catering, laundry and domestic services. Others are taking steps to improve the efficiency of such services. However, competitive tendering is the ultimate test of efficiency and I expect all boards to apply it.

27. Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when he will next meet the chairmen of the health boards in Scotland to discuss his privatisation proposals.

I discussed competitive tendering with them at our regular meeting on 13 November. I expect to meet them again on 12 March 1985.
