Changes in the figures reflect the reorganisation of employment services for disabled people which were introduced progressively in 1983–84, and the removal in October 1982 of the requirement to register for employment at jobcentres in order to claim unemployment and allied benefits. Figures from October 1982 therefore relate only to disabled people who choose to register for work at jobcentres and are not directly comparable with those for earlier years.

The figures client numbers and placings in 1983–84 do not include those disabled people helped by the general employment services in jobcentres.
