asked the Prime Minister why she appointed the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to attend the current year's conference of the Franco-British Council.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland was invited to attend the conference by the Franco-British Council, and has attended previous conferences organised by the Council. The Secretary of State for Employment, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and my noble Friend the Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, also attended the conference.
