§ Mr. Norman Atkinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will seek an understanding with the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that permission will be granted for street collections on behalf of the miners and their families where applications are made and have been endorsed by the mayor of the borough.
§ Mr. MellorAll applications for street collections which are endorsed by the mayor of the appropriate borough are referred to the advisory committee appointed by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis with the approval of the Secretary of State. It is for the advisory committee to make recommendations to the com-missioner, and my right hon. and learned Friend sees no reason to intervene.
§ Mr. Norman Atkinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions are pending in the Y division of the Metropolitan police following the recent bookings of persons collecting on behalf of miners' families; and if he will list the statutes or the regulations under which such persons have been charged or face proceedings.
§ Mr. HurdThe Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis tells me that as at 31 July 13 people had been reported for offences against regulations made under section 5 of the Police, Factories Etc. (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1916, whilst seeking to make street collections, in Y district, on behalf of miners' families. The commissioner is considering whether prosecutions should be brought.
