HL Deb 01 August 1984 vol 455 c866WA
Lord Mulley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in pursuit of the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs's recent statement about the need to reduce non-tariff barriers to intra-Community trade, they will make proposals to secure uniform requirements for approval throughout the European Economic Community for farm tractors and farm machinery, which would be welcomed by British manufacturers.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth

Council Directive 74/150/EEC of 4th March 1974, made under Article 100 of the Treaty of Rome, has already established a Community system of type approval for wheeled agricultural or forestry tractors. Her Majesty's Government supports the Commission's initiative in proposing new ways of speeding up the creation of Community standards. However, there are no plans at present for a similar approval system for other farm machines.
