HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c327W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what measures he has taken to protect the dairy industry in south-west Wales by pressing for the implementation of regional milk quota variations with member states of the European Economic Community.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

There is a fixed quota available for distribution within the Milk Marketing Board area of England and Wales which cannot be exceeded. Therefore any system of distribution of milk quota which favoured certain regions within that area could only be undertaken at the expense of producers in other regions. However, distribution of the quota on the basis of 1983 production will benefit those areas particularly South West Wales where production increased significantly between 1981 and 1983.
