§ Mr.McCrindleasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will commission a study to determine which windows and glass door panels should be required to meet the British Standards Institution codes of practice for glazing; and if he will make a statement.
§ Sir George YoungInformation relating to necessary standards for glazing of windows and doors is constantly under review. There is no need for a separate study in the light of widespread acceptance of the British Standard code of practice for glazing in buildings—BS 6262: 1982.
§ Mr.McCrindleasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will consider selective enforcement of the British Standards Institution codes of practice for glazing to be determined by the findings of a study; and if he will require all future construction projects to apply the British standards.
§ Sir George YoungThe glazing industry is conducting a major campaign to ensure that suppliers and installers of glazed doors and windows follow the recommendations of the new British Standard code of practice. It is preferable for such codes to be adopted voluntarily and this campaign has our full support. There is evidence to suggest that BS6262—code of practice for glazing for buildings—is widely accepted as good practice by the construction and glazing industries. The position will, however, be kept under review.
