HC Deb 30 April 1984 vol 59 cc41-2W
Mr.Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many senior managers at Government communications headquarters have volunteered to undertake polygraph tests.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

All senior management were given an opportunity to volunteer to take part in the initial stages of the polygraph pilot scheme. They were almost unanimous in agreeing to do so and most of the polygraph tests have now been completed. It would not be appropriate to give further details.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the cost of sending the Government communications headquarters security officer to the United States of America to train in polygraph work.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

None. No GCHQ officers have been trained in the use of the polygraph.

Mr.Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many employees of Government communications headquarters have not yet expressed a preference for either option A, to remain at Government communications headquarters under the new conditions, or option B, to seek transfer; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

While more than 98 per cent. have now signed option A, the position remains that a tiny proportion have not yet expressed a preference for either option A or option B.
