HC Deb 27 April 1984 vol 58 c617W
Mr. Frank Field

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the latest figures for the sub-divisional establishments of the Merseyside police.

Mr. Hurd

[pursuant to his reply, 12 April 1984, c. 319.]: The authorised establishments of the territorial divisions in the Merseyside police on 31 December 1983 were as follows:

Territorial Division Authorised Establishment
'A' (City) Division 517
'B' (Sefton) Division 552
'C'(Northern) Division 398
'D' (Central) Division 509
'E' (St Helens) Division 335
'F' (Southern) Division 489
'G' (Wirral) Division 576

Chief officers of police keep the allocation and use of force manpower under constant review to meet current objectives and priorities and local needs. Establishment figures showing a more detailed distribution for particular areas of the force would therefore be misleading and would not adequately reflect the numbers of police officers, including officers from central divisions, for example, traffic, actually deployed there at any one time.
