HC Deb 27 April 1984 vol 58 cc620-1W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the cost of the installation of a fire alarm and a fire hydrant in the Falklands.

Sir George Young

This could vary enormously depending on the scope and nature of the requirement.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will specify the obligations he has imposed on the Mowlem, Laing, Amey Roadstone consortium in relation to the Falklands airport to buy British materials and equipment; and whether he is satisfied these obligations are being adhered to;

(2) if he will list the occasions on which the Property Services Agency has allowed Mowlem, Laing, Amey Roadstone to purchase materials and equipment from overseas for the building of the Falklands airport.

Sir George Young

The contract conditions require the use of United Kingdom materials and equipment unless this is impracticable or uneconomic. Any proposals for significant use of materials and equipment from outside the United Kingdom have to be notified to the PSA. I am satisfied that the contractor is adhering to these conditions. The detailed information requested by the hon. Member could be provided only at disproportionate cost and some is a matter of commercial confidence between the PSA and the contractor.
