HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 c536W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing production, imports and exports of wine in the European Economic Community in each of the past 10 years, together with the amount consumed as a beverage and the amount turned into (a) industrial alcohol and (b) other products.

Mrs. Fenner

The information available is set out in the following table. Figures are not available on the volume of wine turned into industrial alcohol, but it might be assumed as a rough guide that alcohol of 86 per cent. volume and over would generally be used for this purpose. Separate figures have therefore been given for such alcohol distilled under Community measures. This breakdown is not available for other distillations undertaken outside these measures, for example by member states on their own account.

prices; the extension to 1990 of the ban on new planting of vines and its application for the first time to quality wines; and a reduction in aid for distillation of certain categories of wine.
