asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish in the Official Report details of the science vote and University Grants Committee research and development expenditure in each year since 1974 for each research council, by each sector undertaking work and the proportion expended in each English region and in Wales, expressed as a total and per capita.

The amounts of the grants-in-aid made to each research council from the science budget in each year since 1974–75 are as follows. Information about the breakdown of these amounts by subject, or by English regions and Wales, could not be obtained without disproportionate cost. The University Grants Committee does not make grants to research councils.

candidates with greater freedom of choice and lead to increased competition between examining bodies. Initiatives currently under consideration include the promotion of competition for responsibility for exploiting inventions deriving from research council funded projects; and the introduction of measures to permit and stimulate commercial activities within further and higher education.
