HC Deb 25 April 1984 vol 58 cc559-60W
Sir Gerard Vaughan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of units and district administrators and directors of nursing in the National Health Service; and what percentage of these are new to their positions since the abolition of the area health authorities.

retirement pensions is attributable to contributions made by the National Health Service on the basis of their dispensing income.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

This information is not collected centrally. Contributions made reflect superannuable income for the provision of all general medical services, including where appropriate dispensing. They do not distinguish between component parts of that income.

Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the overall cost of retirement pensions in each year since 1978–79; and what would have been the total cost if they had been indexed to the retail price index of each year in which they were uprated; and what would be the actual payment, both for a single person and for a married couple.

Dr. Boyson

The standard rate of retirement pension payable with effect from the November 1978 uprating was £19.50 for a single person and £31.20 for a married couple. The table following shows the actual rates payable at each uprating from November 1979 and the total costs in each financial year from 1978–79, and what those rates and costs would have been if retirement pension had been indexed to movements in the retail price index since November 1978.

Mr. John Patten
